Watch: Albee Layer In “Opinionated Passion”
“Everyone’s opinionated but you either bottle it up or let it out.”
“Oh, did you see what I wrote [on IG]?” Is how a typical Stab call to Albee starts.
“How’d you know? Care to elaborate.”
“I had a feeling you’d be calling.” More laughs, “Of course.”
And the next thing you know, you not only have a very clickable headline (like Some Of The Girls Surf Jaws Better Than The Guys) but enough detail to back up whatever statement he’s making. He’s a different professional surfer – one who cares about surfing and wants progression to elevate beyond what anyone’s thought possible. It’s the reason the West Bowl at Jaw is his and for his dedication to that extra rotation in the air. It’s why he’s got a snub-nosed board that allows him to do nosegrabs. And when we invited him to Stab High, he became a sounding board for our competition, from judges to format and beyond.
Mr. Layer lays himself bare and doesn’t compromise who he is to fit the desired mold of the industry.
This film is essentially the Albee Layer documentary, directed by Dan Norkunas of Take Shelter Productions and produced by JuneShine Hard Kombucha. As they state, Opinionated Passion is “a glimpse into the pragmatic and polarizing persona that is Albee Layer.”
We call it a damn enjoyable doco starring one of Stab’s favorite gentlemen. Hit play and watch Albee get pushed over the rocks in a situation that’d kill most and listen to the commentary. While Matt Meola starts to figure out an emergency plan to save his best friend; Kaleo Roberston’s voice pops in, “No he’s got this. He’s an animal.” Then wash it down with the next 15-minutes.
