Volcom Dominated Their Backyard (AKA Pipeline) On This Hawaiian Winter
11 minutes of Pipeline carnage and bliss, courtesy of Balaram Stack, Yago Dora, Mitch Coleborn, Dusty Payne, and more.
Sometimes we forget how serious of a wave Pipeline is.
Three months of watching highlight-only clips will do that. However, a film such as Volcom’s above, which shows both the carnage and bliss of a true Hawaiian winter, serves to reset our gnarometers and make us appreciate Pipeline’s most dedicated ledge-hoppers for the madmen that they are.
We’re mainly talking about New York’s Balaram Stack, who put on a heroic performance over the 2018/19 winter, surfing Pipe every time it broke and scratching into waves that would make most others wince.
Following Bal’s lead was the rest of Volcom’s (prolific) surf team, including Yago Dora, Mitch Coleborn, Kaimana Henry, and dozens more.
But the real star of the show is Pipeline. Over the course of 10 minutes, we have no choice but to recognize just how special that perforated chunk of reef is to surfing. There’s truly nowhere like it.
We encourage you to watch this before bed, during an extended bathroom break, or even on a lunch date. Just don’t spew your clam chowder over Bal’s opening duckdive sequence.
