This Lunatic Tried To Acid-Drop Into A Wave Off The Steamer Lane Cliff
…and almost made it.
After watching this edit, it becomes clear that Jacob Szekely is a late-nineties, or perhaps early 2000’s pro surfer at heart.
From the baggy attire to the whip-at airs to the acid-inspired drops off Santa Cruz cliffs, the San Diego native is a token of a bygone and highly divisive era in surfing.
When asked where his inspiration comes from, Jacob replied:
“I would say it’s a combination of loving the Air Tour guys like Kerrzy growing up, and just who I hang out with nowadays. I hang with a ton of pro skaters, snowboarders, and action sports athletes who just have that vibe. It’s kinda just what gets me fired up to go for broke.”
As for the acid drops…
“Noa Deane’s acid drop in Cluster got me so fired up to start doing them. Ever since I saw that, I’ve been dreaming of taking it to the next level and finding big cliffs to do new tricks off. The Steamer Lane one never seemed realistic though, ’cause it’s so damn big and just hard to line everything up. But I was up in Santa Cruz for a contest at the Lane and then John Mel, Wil Reid, and all the homies said: “do an acid drop”. So I sent one, almost landed it, and then I had everyone hyping me up to keep trying, so I was determined to try and stick it. That was until I broke 2 boards and blew out my ankle. I’ll try it again someday, though.”
Since then, a dirt bike crash has made a tweaked ankle the least of Zeke’s worries.
His caption on the above post reads [sic]:
Super Grateful For All The Kind Messages, Positive Vibes, and Prayers The Last Couple Days. I Guess This is Just God’s way of Slowing me down Haha. I got 36 Stitches, 2 Steel Plates in my Mouth, 4 Screws, and a Disk was out in the back of my Neck!! Surgery’s went well, and the Doc said I’ll be back in commission Soon.
Love or hate Jacob’s brand of surfing (and corresponding personality), you can’t deny that he’s damn entertaining. We’ve already watched this video twice and are deliberating a guilt-stricken third.
