This Guy’s Name Means ‘Brave With Spear’, And It’s Not Wrong
Gearoid Mcdaid treats Mullaghmore like it’s the Keiki bowl.
There’s been a lot of debate in the Stab camp about how to pronounce Gearoid Mcdaid’s name.
We get emails from Gearoid fairly regularly, typically including footage of him standing in mutant Irish meat lockers and throwing the odd fin. While we enjoy the clips and often share them across our platforms, we have little to no idea how we’d address the guy if we ever saw him in person.
So rather than embarrassing ourselves (and perhaps Gearoid) by asking him for a lesson in the Irish tongue, we decided to hit our pal with a similarly difficult-to-decipher name, Schuyler Allen (pronounced ‘Skyler’), who’s spent some time on the Emerald Isle chasing waves with G.
“It’s pronounced ‘Gār-o-wedge’,” Schuyler said, with a level of sincerity that made us feel bad for our involuntary giggles. “No, really, that’s how you say it. But we called him ‘Garage’ to keep it simple,” Schuyler finished. (He even sent a Youtube link to back up his claim.)
“Gearoid’s name translates to ‘brave with spear,'” Schuyler continued, “which is pretty fitting for an Irish charger pushing his Luke Hart surfboard over the ledge at the country’s heaviest waves.”
Yeah, fair call.
In his latest edit, ‘Domestic Tourist’, Gearoid packs some bombs at Mullaghmore, but he also doesn’t mind having his back against the wall, putting on a clinic at the infamous Aileen’s (2:18), where he chips into the psycho ender of our dreams (5:18).
We’re not sure how much Monster and Guinness you have to drink to want to surf that wave backhand, but after navigating the world with a name like Gearoid, everything else must be a cakewalk.
Tune in for some cold water insanity from two of Ireland’s finest.
