The Brothers Gudang Tackle Oversized Jeffrey’s Bay
Like big brown Lowers!
Jeffrey’s Bay, crown jewel of South Africa, is considered one of the world’s best waves on account of its speed, length, firmness of lip and occasional eight-second tube. This spot resides on most surfers’ (AKA all regular foots) global bucket list and remains a favorite of the competitors on the Championship Tour.
Last year, for instance, the CT experienced a relentless series of swells for their annual event, resulting in five full days of overhead, mostly offshore conditions. This led to eight 10-point rides and some of the greatest performances we saw all season.
But not all Jeffrey’s swells are created equal.
Sometimes the wave-inducing storm is too west, or too close to the coast, or just too big for Jeffrey’s to properly fire. I’m not sure what exactly was the case in the above video, but despite the double-overhead waves and offshore conditions, the Brothers Gudang surfed only a mediocre version of the iconic break.
The waves had weird sections, were a little flat, and the tube was essentially nonexistent (unless your name is Dylan Graves). Nevertheless, mediocre Jerffrey’s is better than good day at most other places, and because of who Tanner and Pat are as humans, they couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces.
And ain’t that what it’s really all about?
