The Best Surfing I’ve Ever Seen: Dave Malcolm

2012 was an monumental year — in surfing and otherwise.

The Mayan calendar came to end, sparking Y2K-level panic and Y2K-level results (i.e. a whole lot of nothing).

Hurricane Sandy flattened large swathes of the US east coast, and Vladimir Putin was re-elected as Russia’s president (once and for all).

Meanwhile Joel Parkinson finally won his world title, cementing himself among surfing’s greats.

And, according to our most revered lensmen, the world’s greatest surfing went down across various corners of the globe.

What, don’t believe us?

Of the seven Best Surfing I’ve Ever Seen eps we’ve released thus far, three have come from 2012. Not to mention, an unreleased (and highly anticipated) eighth iteration, featuring a certain rivermouth in Japan, was also filmed in the same 365-day-period that saw Encyclopedia Brittanica discontinue its print edition (after 246 years!).

That means 50% of the best surfing ever seen by our sport’s most focused (get it?) spectators happened in 2012. Wild.

This episode, the seventh, features Dave Malcolm — longtime Transworld Surf filmer who’s since gone on to create Weird Waves with Dylan Graves among other commercial successes.

Dave believes that the best surfing he’s ever seen was by Andrew Doheny, on a hand-shaped board, in the Caribbean, in the year…you guessed it…2012. But, funnily enough, he only realized it after the fact, because he was too busy looking for “tricks”.
