Style Worth Preserving
Alex Knost channels Gerry Lopez, Joel Tudor and more.
“I’m inspired by all the great people throughout the decades that really left their landmark in surfing’s culture. The boards I make are influenced by Gerry Lopez, the Campbell brothers and even Joel Tudor in the 90s, who was that second wave of traditional long boarding,” says Alex Knost as he walks us through the creative direction he took while shaping boards for the RVCA Boardroom. No slouch when it comes to surfing with unparalleled style himself, Al Knost knows better than anyone that the history behind a surfer’s craft is just as important as raw talent. Al knows this relationship between past and present fuels the fires for future innovations, whether it be in the shaping bay or on the wave face. Those who do not learn history might be doomed to repeat it. But what if it’s worthy of repeating? For Mr Knost, this might be an exempt scenario. Added bonus: Dial the volume to enjoy the Glitterbust soundtrack which Al composed and performed with Sonic Youth’s own Kim Gordon.
