Sean Gunning Is Sculpted In The Image Of A Left Wedge
Harnessing the speed of the Spanish sling shot.
Sean Gunning seems as Australian as steak and cheese from the outside, but closer inspection reveals that he scratches “Spanish” on his immigration forms.
The youngster is part of the great European push currently boiling below the surface of the competition world, and his latest offering ‘Cooked’ is a lesson in fine-tuning your craft. Whilst the waves throughout the clip might be unremarkable — there’s nay a wave over three foot during the six-minute player — it’s an accurate depiction of an athlete on the up, searching for marginal gains in marginal conditions.
Plus, the pleasure of watching good surfers making the most of everyday dribble is an enduring Stab guilty pleasure. As is the shorebreak footage from 2:50 on. Because, as anyone who’s ever tried to make visual surf stories knows, nothing sows the seeds of summer visually like shooting a shorey through a sea of swimmers jumping the breakers.
All in all ‘Cooked’ ran for six and a half minutes, featured some surgical rail work from a young Spaniard on the rise and made us want to break out the groveller and charge out into the swill after work. Which surely is mission accomplished for this sort of hype reel.
