When Occy’s Going, You’d Better Not

High(and low)lights from a recent Kirra swell.

The first proper swell of the season hit the Coolangatta the other day, and things got rowdy. Kirra Point, infamous for its long, heavy, and unpredictable right-hand tubes, was in top form.

The sand-bottomed break is seductive from the beach but wildly unpredictable up close. A set wave here sucks up with a level of power that the Dyson Vacuum engineers can’t comprehend. Ask the four poor souls who got sent to the gallows on the same wave (1:10).

As far as the crowd is concerned, this place is a zoo. Many burns and “didn’t see ya there”s dished out down the magical point. This is weird because all you have to do is look left to realize you’re in the wrong.

“Honey, I surfed with Occy today!”

Unless you’re Occy, then you take off and let the fella behind you get a whiff of your new conditioner. Give him one last inhale of that sweet, sweet Pantene before sacrificing him to the foam ball.
