No Regrets: Ricky Basnett’s return to surf after 8 years of alcohol abuse
Former world tour surfer Ricky Basnett’s career was jammed by a battle with the bottle – a very common story, and one that nearly tore him apart. But then something happened, and this stylish South African found the strength to come back after eight years under the influence. Shot by Jason Hearn, No Regrets chronicles Ricky’s story through the medium of a roadtrip along a remote part of the African coastline. Barrels and fierce weather are the stunning backdrop to this redemptive story. “I hadn’t shot anything in surfing for the last four years since my last film The Africa Project and I was looking for a story in surfing and then Ricky came up,” recounts Jason when asked about his reasons for engaging with this project. “My objective and desired outcome was to shoot a creative, cinematic, visually thought-out film on one man’s journey, and hopefully through Ricky’s story show that you have the choice to change your life for the better – it’s up to you. If this film can help one person become better then we have achieved our goal. I also wanted the film to relaunch Ricky to the world as he is such a naturally talented surfer and good guy.”
