Morgan Freeman’s Surf Film Debut
Barron Mamiya stars in ‘Barron 21’
I love watching Barron Mamiya surf. He’s one of the few younger guys that can hold their own at Pipe. The kid is a human projectile on a surfboard. He fully commits to the drop, stands tall through the scary parts, and punts like a madman. Navigates the world’s deadliest wave like a toddler in a kiddy pool.
That being said, these Gen-Z kids (I can say this because I’m one too) need to find a new source of inspiration. The Soundcloud rapper aesthetic is just not working in surf clips. This piece triggered my PTSD from that weird soap opera Noah Beschen released last year.
As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to surfing, the less editing the better. Especially if you surf at Barron’s level. Extra effects should be reserved for those who can’t woo the viewer with their abilities alone.
I’ll give Barron a pass for the 21 Savage song. Even though he raps with a ‘Model T on a cobblestone path’ flow, the Morgan Freeman voiceover is a crisp touch. Plus, Barron just turned 21 years-old a few days ago.
But “Dreams and Nightmares”? The only thing that song can hype up is a frat party in 2013. If a Meek Mill song was mandatory (it definitely wasn’t), it should have been “Blue Notes”.
At the end of the day, Barron is a beast. A minotaur among guinea pigs. Criticisms from a cunty button-pusher like myself mean nothing. The surf clips needed to produce an A+ film are present, they’re just being muffled by unnecessary noise.
