Mikala Jones And The Art Of The Doggy-Door Exit
Get low, set your line, and say a little prayer.
Indo is the land of “perfect” waves. It has many rights, it has many lefts, and most of them offer a brilliant tube before ending in a sublimely deep channel. If you’re any good, there’s no reason to get your hair wet. Tube, paddle back out, repeat.
But Mikala Jones, who hails from the much-more-likely-to closeout-and/or-kill-you waves of Oahu’s North Shore, loves soaking his mop. Mr. Jones spends half the year in Indo, mostly surfing waves that other people don’t know about or that they want nothing to do with.
In the video above, Mikala takes on one of Indo’s infamous righthand tubes. It offers a 100-meter gaping tunnel before hitting the shallow inside shelf and running off into destruction. It’s basically a really, really good closeout — maybe the best in the world. But unless your board has turbo-powered boosters, it’s unlikely you’ll make it to the end unscathed, hence the doggy-door exit.
Does he have it down or what?
