Makana Pang Goes On The Pipe Waves No One Else Wants
Watch him jump for joy in ‘Commit’.
Makana Pang, know the name? You should.
Not just because he’s the son of iconic Hawaiian surfer/shaper (and former Eddie competitor) Dennis Pang, but also for his approach at the most famous — and deadly — wave on earth. The Banzai Pipeline.
According to Koa Rothman, Makana goes on waves that nobody else — including himself — wants out there. And he’s not talking about the burgery ones.
“He’ll go on the craziest closeout double-up, where I’m like, ‘Why did Makana just go on that?'” Koa asks. He quickly answers his own question. “Once Makana’s at top of the pecking order and he’s got all that practice of going on every wave out there, he’s gonna be one of the best Pipe surfers of all time.”
Nathan Florence sees something similar in the young Hawaiian. According to the middle Flobro, Makana is out at Pipeline more than any of his contemporaries. “Whether it’s shitty, rain or shine, Makana is out there every single time.”
‘Commit’, a film by Cult Gabe, gives more background into Makana and his deep surfing lineage…plus his inevitably bright future. This is the story of the next great Pipeline surfer. Tune in.
