Macaroni in the Pot
Jaleesa Vincent and 200 Lefts in the Mentawais
We’ve all had our post-pandemic coming-out-of-lockdown stories – some of which are more interesting than others.
Jaleesa Vincent’s, however, is easily in the 99th percentile in terms of “what I did this Summer” winningness. In her new edit, Macaroni in the Pot, the 22-year-old Sunny Coaster takes us along as she makes her inaugural post-pandemic escape with a single wave in mind.
A solid follow-up to her 2021 release and SSOTY contender, Eerie, this 9-minute ode to creative expression swiftly transports the viewer from a beautiful but doldrum-like calm to a bright awakening of lefts, lefts, and more lefts (two hundred, to be exact).
The stark contrast feels tropical mist-refreshing, as is the film’s departure from much of the modern women’s surfing content we often see. Like Jelly herself, “Macaroni” is a playful, neon melange of animation, poetry, music, and mesmerizing surfing – all created and performed by the star character with an enviable, aspirational amount of joie de vivre.
Needless to say, when Jaleesa puts out a part, we put down whatever it is we’re doing and watch. And then watch again.
