The Box Is An Australian Rite Of Passage
Billabong sends its young’ns to a ritual slaughter.
Visiting West Oz is an Australian rite of passage.
You can clock all the 10-second Gold Coast tubes you want, but you’re not a complete surfer until you’ve pegged the end section at Northies and wrestled the foamball at The Box.
No brand knows this better than Australian-born Billabong, which is why they send their young upstarts out west before parading them across the globe. This year, it was Jai Glindeman and Liam O’Brien who received their inaugural floggings, and boy did they take the job to heart.
Following around both locals (Creed McTaggart) and legends (Parko), the boys got themselves into all kinds of aquatic mishaps, but perhaps none moreso than CT star Griff Colapinto at 1:20. That eager beaver!
One of our favorite parts of the film comes around the 5:20 mark, when Creed (who’s been surfing for 20 years) gets schooled by the local grom, Sid Englert (first seen Surf100 West Oz), on the North Point paddle out. Looks like Creed’s been spending a bit too much time in Byron shire these days.
This 15-minute piece is an ode to core Australian surfing, and a reminder that no one returns unscathed from WA. Watch here.
