Watch Now: John John’s Winter Reel Will Melt the Plastic Off Your Dashboard
‘Maps of Home’ is a reintroduction to the best surfer on earth.
Oh, how I love release day for a new John John Florence surf film. He’s the only surfer to give me goosebumps through YouTube consistently.
Johns’s latest clip, Maps of Home, came about an hour ago. I know this because I started hammering the refresh button of his page at 11:50 PST. As you can guess, this video is fucked— so absolutely, positively, fucking fucked.
It opens with that winter day at Outer Reef. I don’t need to give specifics; if you’ve had internet anytime in the past six months, you know exactly what I’m referring to. Johns (mostly) unseen clips from this session are extraordinary, and the orchestra adds to the dramatic scene.
The film then shifts towards more normal but still massive waves at Haleiwa, Pipe, and even a few sandbars. Maps of Home is a 20-minute reminder that JJF sets a benchmark for rail surfing. It is a reminder that we don’t get all the time, but we’re sure glad when we do.
