Jadson Andre Has Nine Mouths To Feed
And other things worth noting from this short film.
You know that type of morning when you wake up with the dawn, see that first sparkle of sunlight dancing through your window just nice, roll out of bed feeling so warm, so alive, gaze at your beautiful face in the mirror and say: “I need more Jadson Andre in my life.”
Neither have I. My face isn’t beautiful — it’s tolerable at best — and beyond that, I’ve always felt as though the current amount of Jadson Andre in my life is rather appropriate. There’s a reason the guy is on the CT. There’s also a reason why nobody has ever called him the Tom Curren of Natal.
Turns out there are also reasons for everything in his life and you can learn about a lot of them in a new short film compliments of your favourite League!
You’ll find out that his parents were 14 and 15 (respectively) when Jadson was born. And that his folks (respectably) thought that surfing would ruin his life. And that he is financially responsible for nine people, although the documentary doesn’t elaborate on that because the League sometimes doesn’t love you back.
One of the most interesting bits, though, comes around the 3:30 mark. Kelly Slater, the 11x World Champ, our king, assumes the mind of a judge and says, “Trying to do the same thing every wave? We’re going to start giving you 5s where we were giving you 8.5s before.”
So, in a film produced by the governing body of surfing, they admit that they started giving an individual drastically different scores, without any change to the criteria whatsoever, just because they felt like it. I can’t tell if that’s laughable or disgusting. It’s probably both.
Come dawn tomorrow, I might just wake up feeling like a Jadson fan.
