“I’m Not Trying To Become A Big Wave Surfer, I Already Am One”
The world is “waking up late” to mountain-tamers Emi Erickson and Izzi Gomez. Come get acquainted.
Emi Erickson is a second-generation big wave surfer and unrelenting stylist. Izzi Gomez is a 5x SUP World Champion and aspiring big wave surfer.
Last winter, both women were given the opportunity to compete in the Jaws Challenge. For Emi, this would be her third time competing at the Maui big-wave event. It would be Izzi’s first.
In the Red Bull series, ‘No Small Feat’, we follow both of the gals in their preparation for the event.
For Izzi, having just come off her fifth SUP World Title and wanting to challenge herself in a different disclipline, this event is a chance to redefine herself.
For Emi, the concept of competing in big waves creates a minor existential crisis. She rides big waves because it brings her immense joy. Adding a clock and a price tag to that very pure thing just doesn’t feel right.
From a story-telling perspective, this is an excellent piece of cinema. And Emi was made for TV. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more organic and engaging than the North Shore native.
Episode two (presumably of the contest itself) drops soon. Enjoy!
