Ian Crane Conjures Seven Minutes Of Unseen ‘Crane Brain’ Extras
Prepare your cranium.
On an O’Neill trip to Morocco last month, Stab’s favorite goofy-footed golden retriever, Ian Crane, folded his foot and fractured it in four places.
Though the consequences of such an injury are frustrating for a career section-slapper — canceled trips, time out of the water, possible worry regarding sponsorships — Crane doesn’t seem too phased. He admits to initial moments of rock-bottom bummer, but he’s all positivity regarding the coming months.
Firstly, he’s got three edits-worth of clips leftover from Crane Brain — which will be drip fed to our receptors in the coming months. You can watch the first installment above.
“We’re making videos based on each location we were in for the movie,” Ian tells me. “This one is all Lakeys, the next clip will be around France with these crazy fun kids from Biarritz, and the last one will be Ireland with Cory Lopez.
The year that we filmed this, I swear it was fucking perfect every day. This recent season was strange, every time we got substantial swell there were weird rips through it, or it was too big. It was so good when we were filming for Crane Brain though.”
As for his other optimism?
“I’m kinda ready for something new when I’m healed. I feel like I’ve been doing the same circle for too long — Lakeys, Sumatra, back to Bali and staying in Ulus,” he laughs, implying the chaos of a standard Balinese dry-season.
“I was getting in the rhythm of going to the same places at the same times of year. I have a weird feeling that this injury will be good. I think when I’m healed, it’ll put me on a new timeline and I’ll end up going somewhere new. No idea where that might be, but I think it might send me on a different trajectory.”
In the meantime, we’ll have all three of his Brain Bust B-Sides in the content cannon — while Ian PT’s his way to (hopefully) a summertime Sumbawan stint.
