Healey and the big blue
Mark Healey is a devil in the big waves. He also likes to swim deep while holding his breath, pat sharks and make you feel very inadequate about your fear of the ocean. Taj Burrow often recounts the time he was riding ski home on dark after a tow session in Western Australia. He heard a whistle and saw a shaka hanging out of the water. As he approached, he found Healey two clicks at the back at Smith’s Beach, free-diving and spearing on his own, thrilled at the beauty of the Indian Ocean. TB asked if we wanted a ride back to the ramp but Healey was cool on his own. Any ocean on dark is a frightening prospect but West Oz? V serious.
