Watch: Fickle East Coast Left Goes XXM (But Girthy)
Kipp Caddy owns the day with once-in-a-decade tube.
Unless you were cryogenically preserved within the last week, you’ve seen the east-facing coast of New South Wales lit up with gargantuan swell and ruler-edged conditions. Perhaps you’ve even tried to convince yourself that Deadmans is attainable for the everyman.
I mean, it kinda has a chip-shot…
But there’s always that one beast — that terrifying break in your hometown that’s just off-limits.
This wave is typically a deep-water shelf too that’s far from shore, breaking on too many rocks, surrounded by too many sharks. While the spot may be alluring, surfing it would incredibly dangerous. Obvious factors aside, this wave’s infrequent nature leads to a lack of lineup IQ that is all but mandatory in heavy-water surfing.
But eventually — typically at the behest of that one psycho friend — you give it a go. And somehow the gamble pays off.
This is the situation that a few east coast surfers, including Dylan Longbottom and Kipp Caddy, found themselves in late last week.
With overloaded lineups all around them, these boys rolled the dice, checking a fickle left in the hopes that it would show its teeth. Not only did they find their beast — they danced with it, too.
Fortunately, Cameron Staunton was there to capture it all — including Kipp’s once-in-a-decade backside cavern.
