Bobby Martinez Isn’t Going To Sweet Talk You Into The Bobby Quad
“It kept me in the water on shitty little gutless days. Take that how you will.”
“It’s a good little board for shitty little gutless days. It’s kinda been my savior for the past six years. I had nothing to do with it. I just said ‘give me a board that will keep me in the water’ and they came up with it.”
Bobby’s been riding quads almost exclusively for the past eight years. “I always liked what Nate Fletcher and Mike Ho were riding. Those guys are my favorite surfers and inspirations to me” he told Stab. “I’ve ridden it in good waves all the way up to eight feet. Real waves and it worked fine. I ride mine in 5’2”x 2 5/16 x 19 just with the large template CI quad fins.”
PU or EPS?
“I don’t even know what those things are to tell you the truth. *Picks up board* This one says ‘eco board project?’ Yeah, no idea what that means. I guess it’s the foam? They all feel the same. They feel good.”
Better for drawn out cutbacks or tight jams in the pocket?
“It’s like a weird little skateboard. Just kinda goes where you want it to. Honestly it does both. I’ve ridden at Rincon and it held in. I’m more of a heavy-footed, rounded surfer and it let me do carves or whatever. But I’ve seen Yadin (Nicol) ride it and he’s more snappy.”
There are three things apparent from our brief chat with Bobby.
- He likes this board
- He doesn’t care to scrutinize it
- This isn’t a fucken sales pitch, but something about his understatedness is ironically compelling
According to CI’s Devon Howard, “We are getting 10 out of 10 team riders loving it. That is extremely rare. Usually half the surfers are just ho hum on new models.”
So there.

Or not.
