All It Takes Is A Surfboard, With Leila Hurst
In her case it was a 7’2, flip-nose, Bill Hamilton mini-mal.
What was your first surfboard?
For me, it was a 5’10 Robert August mini-mal with white, yellow, and blue stripes.
Leila Hurst also rocked a midget log—a 7’2 Bill Hamilton with a rockered-out nose—which you can see in the video above.
Both boards served their purpose of creating positive childhood memories that led to a lifetime of surf addiction. The best kind of addiction, no doubt.
Recently Leila decided to revisit her past, meeting the very same Bill Hamilton who shaped her first board in his shaping bay to craft a modern, slightly longer version of the mal that started it all. Bill and Leila drew outlines, sawed foam, and performed the myriad other tasks associated with building a surf craft before taking it out in chest-high peelers.
Leila grinned from ear-to-ear, and ain’t that what it’s all about?
Watch the short and tell us all about your first board, below.
