Albee Layer’s Wipeout Reel Epitomizes the North Pacific Winter
Join us in collectively banging our heads against the wall.
If you’ve spent this winter looking for surf in the North Pacific, chances are you feel utterly betrayed. Paddle out at any Southern Californian surf break, and you’ll hear the locals grumbling about the “worst winter ever (and cold too!).” And really, it seems unjust that our most swell-heavy season could pass with only two or three major systems to show for it.
But by the way Albee Layer talks about this winter — thanks to prevailing north winds and a lack of impressive swells — Maui hasn’t been much better.
Parting from his M.O. of dropping a winter reel with Pea’hi pits and stomped rotations, this dismal season has forced Albee down the road of self-effacing humor, resulting in the two-minute wipeout reel you’ll find above.
Here’s what Albee had to say, via his Instagram:
#MaximumEffort is live on the @takeshelterprod Vimeo page. I get a decent amount of negative comments and messages (especially if I do a political post) but all those people still follow me so I thank you guys for that. This is my present to you. 2 minutes and 22 seconds of wipeouts, most of which I assure your were painful. Any time I say something to annoy just remember when I’m 50 there’s a decent chance I’ll have some brain damage and be limping everywhere I walk. Until then though, I’ll be trying that double cork and spewing unfiltered thoughts your way.
