A Subaqueous Session At Salina Cruz’s Throatiest Tourist Attraction
Kanoa Igarashi and a motley crew of Californians indulge in Oaxacan wonderland.
In the past year, tourism accounted for $2.7 billion dollars worth of Mexico’s income.
The Central American goliath has seen about a 5-10% increase in international tourists each year for the past decade, and is the seventh most visited country in the world.
Though Mexico City makes up most of these numbers with around 30 million visitors per year, the massive influx of international visitors has occurred proportionately on the coast. The number of flights into Salina Cruz’ main airport — Bahias De Huatulco — has nearly quadrupled since 1997, from 123,000/year to 452,000/year.
One of Oaxaca’s main tourist attractions? Waves you can ride inside of.
Pretty cool.
Though, the average San Diegan tech-dad or German acai enthusiast probably isn’t hopping off the plane into backless funnels like these.
After a best-ever May, followed by a very slow June/July, the Southern Pacific is finally hucking some orbs of energy towards malnourished coastlines.
Need proof? Tap in to watch Kanoa Igarashi, Jake Marshall, semi-pro bus boy Tex Mitchell, and solar-salesman-turned-Sharpeye-salesman Myles Freeh enjoying a handful of waves that you might think you’d want but probably wouldn’t actually paddle that hard for.
