John’s competitive spirit is lifting. He’s analysing his every move and thinking forward. “If you lose you’re going to learn something you wouldn’t have if you won,” he says after his loss to Matty Wilko in the quarters at Fiji. If there’s one thing different about John this year, he seems to actually want it. He’s even claiming, well, as much as John claims. Which is more emotion than the little hand jive, casual exit that may or may not have cost him the win over Kelly Slater at Chopes in 2014 (the heat that came down to a tie breaker).
