A Cinematic Experience: John Florence, Bruce Irons, And Koa Smith Below Sea Level
This will brighten your day.
Have you ever seen Surf’s Up, the Hollywood film about a surfing penguin named Cody Maverick?
Corny as it may sound, this animated feature offers the most sincere portrayal of surfing that mainstream has ever attempted. Worlds better than Point Break (1 & 2), Chasing Maverick’s, In God’s Hands etc.
And for those who have seen the film, you know that it concludes with two of the lead characters sharing double-overhead tubes at an idyllic equatorial reef, set to the infuriatingly catchy tune of “You Get What You Give” by the New Rascals.
Here it is, for the uninitiated:
Call me a flaming Cheeto, but this scene spoke to my typically dormant senses of romance and nostalgia.
What feeling in this world eclipses one of sharing flawless surf with just your close friends under a cotton candy sky? I can think of none.
For whatever reason, John John’s new submarine surf clip offered a similar sensation. It’s just so… tranquil. Beautiful. Serene.
Go ahead and see if it doesn’t instantly improve your mood.
