Is There A Better Proof Of Concept Than Mikey February Ripping A Fish Backside?

A 16-minute exception to the tall and lanky rule.

Early this week, we did a deep dive into how surfers’ body types can influence their surfing.

“If you’re just standing on the ground and you go to lean over your toes, you can lean way farther over your toes than you can your heels,” explained Ashton Pickle, a physical therapist turned longtime shaper. “That’s partially because our calf muscles are so strong, but the muscles on the front part of your leg are much less powerful. If you’re short and stocky, the bulk of your weight is much closer to the axis point if you’re short. That’s part of why tall, lanky surfers generally have a hard time surfing backside — especially if they have a narrow stance.”

Mikey February is listed at 6’3 and 158lbs on the CI website — remarkably tall and lanky. And, as you’ll know if you’ve been caught up in the barrage of footage he’s been releasing lately, he stands with a knock-kneed, narrow stance.

Yet, none of this seems to hinder Febs from placing his new CI keel fish at delightful angles in the opening section of his above film. Science makes exceptions for talent, it seems.

Click above for a convincing proof of concept, click here to peruse CI’s selection of Feb’s Fishes, and click here for a full interview with the South African style magnate.
