Yet another Shark Attack on Réunion
There’s been another shark attack on Reunion Island. Yesterday afternoon, 47-year-old surfer Eddy Chaussalet was surfing a spot called La Follette on the West coast of the island. Despite the severity of his injuries the SDIS (Service Départemental d’Incendie et de Secours) have said that it has not been necessary to amputate the arm that was bitten; largely due to the quick and proper administration of first aid by firemen who were quick on the scene, and later the work of doctors at Saint-Denis Hospital. Eddy Chaussalet is a well respected surfer on the island and a regular at La Follette, one of the premier big waves locations on the island. This is the third shark attack for the year on Reunion. The previous two being the tragic death of up-and-coming 13-year-old surfer Elio Canestri in April, and the 20-year old woman who died of cardiac arrest after being attacked whilst swimming at l’Etang-Sale on the southeast end of the island in February. We wish Eddy a speedy recovery and hope he’s back in the water soon.
