What The Hell Was Kelly Riding At Snapper?
Weird board alert.
Kelly may have bowed out of the CS event but goodness he looked spicy. Drew classic lines, stylishly, timed his turns, masterfully, got tubed, deeply. What’s new? In his subsequent heat, he uncharacteristically dropped the ball, handing priority to Cam Richards whose clutch backside tube behind the rock was just enough to pip the 11x World Champ in the dying minutes. We’re all interested in what the GOAT’s riding, few more so than Stab’s CUSP host and joyrider, Stace Galbraith, who was quick to pop the question on the WSL’s broadcast. Here’s what the 11x World Champ had to say.
“It’s only 5’6.5”, I think. It’s an old board, maybe eight years old. It was from when I first started working with Firewire and there were a couple of designs I liked. I wanted something small with a lot of curve in it. This thing is a little bit wider and a few inches shorter but it really fits in the pocket out here.
I opted to go with this fin configuration Greg Webber and I have been messing with for a couple of years. I use them as a set of quads but they have a lot of flex which allows you to load up on bottom turns and you can sustain your turns longer. So if you need to drive around a whitewash you can really hold that speed in the fin, retain your energy.” The GOAT did fail to mention the miniscule fifth fin he was using, which may or may not be his special sauce.
Last week Greg Webber told Stab all about a very similar board he was riding at D’bah a couple of years ago. You can watch and listen to his words below.
