Watch: Kite Surfer Dances With Great White In West Oz
French kite surfers make Great White Shark lures.
A French video blogger has described the moment she was left stranded by the wind on her kiteboard as a Great White Shark approached.
“I have immediately turned around but the wind was really light, I was struggling to get my ass out of the water and I thought: I am done,” says Isabelle Fabre of the incident which occurred in the Fitzgerald River National Park, on the southern coast of Western Australia.
Isabelle had initially thought the large shadow was a dolphin. It was only after it passed beneath her she saw it was a “huge” Great White. Two years ago, south-western Australia was the fatal shark attack capital of the world, following seven deaths in three years. In response, the West Australian State government promised to install drum lines off Perth and the state’s southwest tip. The program ran from January to April 2014 and caught 172 sharks, 68 of which were shot before the policy was abandoned in September of the same year based on a recommendation from the Environmental Protection Agency.
