Twin Fins, Baguette TV, And Left-Field Offerings For Our Sacred GOAT
What’s been going on in France?
If not for events like the Quiksilver Festival, the old-fashioned custom of not allowing a surf competition to get in the way of a proper night out would risk extinction.
Last night, a few hundred people gathered at Le Surfing in Seignosse to watch new edits from Milla Brown and Kael Walsh. Some of those people happened to be wearing comp jerseys a few hours earlier.
Both projects are easily among this year’s most impactful and thus will be in the running for Stab Edit Of The Year. You can watch Milla’s here, and Kael’s is coming soon.
The crowd found them to be worth celebrating.
So, when Miky called the comp on at 9 AM, you might’ve mistaken a few of the crew for having advanced pterygiums. Today’s theme was twin-fins — an excellent choice for a user-friendly morning of waves.
Your 2024 Olympic Gold Medalist had the most creative and yet simple interpretation of the brief — he just took the center fin out of his JS shorty. And, somehow, it didn’t look that bad.
However, it was freesurfing upstart Kelly Slater who earned the day’s highest number — an 8.10 for shmanging a few turns. And sure, he may have had a mini trailer fin tucked back there, but when you win 11 World Titles you can do whatever the fuck you want.
Now, once again, we must talk about Clay Marzo. Every time Clay enters the water, something exciting happens. Do you care to watch another slow-mo clip of him disappearing his body in a wave?
The idea of getting Clay Marzo and Bobby Martinez in the same room is applaudable. The fact that they’re on the same team is outright brilliant. Given the seemingly increasing appetite for a culture that reflects the values held by those who love surfing at its absolute core, could there be a better headline to rally around than Clay and Bobby taking out a surf event in 2024?
A six-point lead is solid considering the current maximum potential of 60 points, but they’ve got two teams of hyper-consistent Euro lords nipping at their heels.
Tomorrow afternoon, we’ll see the start of a storm, which will only get worse on Friday. But they might try to sneak another round in before noon.
There’s a chance that the wind will swing offshore on Saturday. The waves will be well overhead, and rumors suggest a move to La Nord — a notorious sand bank a few hundred meters off the coast, which tends to hold any size swell. Powerful.
Let’s hope the Northern Atlantic is in a generous mood.
