The Surfing Olympic Finals Are On Right Now

And the waves are more Lowers than lethal.

Ed note: The Olympic finals can be watched on: Nine in Australia, Globo in Brazil, CBC in Canada, CCTV in People’s Republic of China, Fuji TV/NHK/Nippon TV/TBS/TV Asahi/TV Tokyo in Japan, SKY NZ in New Zealand, SuperSport in South Africa, NBC in the United States, and Discovery Eurosport across Europe, alongside France Télévisions in France, ARD/ZDF in Germany, and BBC Sport in the United Kingdom, among others.

In true surfing fashion, and much to the financial distress of IOC organizers, we’ve used our entire 10-day waiting period for the 2024 surfing Olympics.

Day one was great, day two marginally less so, day three (briefly) made surfing the most popular sport on earth, and day six got us to where we are today — with four male and female surfers remaining, all fighting for their first Olympic medals.

Oh yeah, and a bunch of other wild shit happened in between — surfboards banned, a judge ousted, an icon retiring, commentators bailing mid-event and so forth.

Now we’re on day 10 — anticipation’s been shaken (not stirred), a new swell is filling in, and two surfers are about to gain untold wealth and fame.

Fascinatingly, and due at least in part to the Olympics seeding controversy, neither the women’s or men’s draws have two surfers remaining from the same country.

On the women’s side, we have:
Heat 1: Caroline Marks (USA) vs Johanne Defay (FRA)
Heat 2: Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA) vs Brisa Hennessy (CRC)

On the men’s side, it’s:
Heat 1: Kauli Vaast (FRA) vs Alonso Correa (PER)
Heat 2: Jack Robinson (AUS) vs. and Gabriel Medina (BRA)

Who ya got? Let us know below.

There will be eight total heats today: four semis, two Sub Finals, and two Grand Finals.

The winner of each semifinal will compete in the Grand Final for either silver or gold. The loser of each semifinal will compete in the Sub Final for bronze or nothing. As Gabriel Medina would tell you from Tokyo 2021 — don’t be that person.

We’ll be covering everything that happens today live from Tahiti, with a comp wrap dropping shortly after the event concludes and side stories being uploaded as they happen both on the site and socials. But for now, feel free to cast your claims or aspersions about Olympics finals day in the comments below.

And place your bets here.

Turns and the odd air might be the only tickets to nationalistic bliss today. Photo: Ryan Miller
