The Gold Coast Is Getting A Wavepool!
Surf Lakes has their revealed plans to open a commercial site by mid-2020.
On the heels of the greatest Gold Coast swell in recent memory, Surf Lakes, the plunger-based wavepool co. whose opening-week debacles you might remember from last October in Yeppoon, has revealed their plans to open a commercial pool site on Australia’s Gold Coast by mid-2020.
Some might consider this an odd time to release such info, as Gold Coast surfers – who are thoroughly torched after surfing a week of eight-foot tubes courtesy of Cyclone Oma – probably don’t care so much about a “two-meter” wave machine at this current moment.
The announcement could’ve waited for a flat spell.
Nevertheless, the word is out. Here’s some copy from the presser:
Surf Lakes has been scouring the Gold Coast for suitable land, and at present has selected an appropriate site in a location that is centrally located and easily accessible for residents and tourists.
Newly appointed Surf Lakes Chief Executive Officer, Mal Borgeaud, is genuinely excited at the prospect of bringing Surf Lakes to such a coveted, surf-proud locale and envisions the facility will give great benefit to the community.
“As a company, we are tremendously excited to be announcing our commitment to building a facility on the Gold Coast. We have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement we have received from both Council and the Queensland Government,” said Borgeaud.
“It makes sense, with the Gold Coast being our home town, that we construct a commercial facility here. We know the facility will bring tremendous benefits to the community, not just by providing waves and surf-oriented fun… it will be a boost for employment, tourism and the local economy,” he continued.
According to Surfer Today, Surf Lakes plans to build the pool near their HQ in Robina, which is just inland from Burleigh Heads.
And though you couldn’t pay a Gold Coast surfer to ride an artificial wave at this very moment, the Queensland flat spells are real, and this new attraction will provide a welcome reprieve during those oftentimes lengthy periods.
