Stab Podcast: How Many Waves Counts As A Session?
Conspiracy theories, wildcard fiascos, and an inception-like surf sin.
Three waves counts as a session.
Anything more is a bonus, and anything less isn’t surfing. End of discussion.
But let’s re-open that conversation immediately, because Danny and Buck have plenty more to talk about on this week’s pod.
Let’s start with the Wildcard Fiasco:
The WSL has announced that any spots that pop up due to a double qualification dilemma will be treated as a season wildcard and handed out at the discretion. In the past, this scenario meant that the next surfer on the CS list would qualify for the CT; as you may recall, last season Morgan Cibilic finished 11th but was still promoted to the big leagues.
Now, the wildcards will be awarded to whomever the WSL chooses at each stop. Many competitors are upset by this decision and have a petition with over 100 signatures from CS and CT surfers to prove it.
Our Swellian friend Jed Smith grabbed the mic for a few moments to discuss a recent article of his that investigates the balance between durability and performance in surfboards.
Is it paranoid to think that board companies design surfboards to break, thus driving repeat purchases? Maybe, but when you’re able to puncture the glass with the wiggle of a thumb, nothing seems off the table.
Surf sins
If you borrow a friend’s board, fuck it up, but have it repaired professionally, have you really committed a crime?
Of course not, but things get tricky when you find out your buddy isn’t the true owner of the board. This web of lies runs thicks; proceed with caution.
