Oscar Moncada Killed In Car Accident
Three local Puerto Escondido surfers killed in a tragic crash.
Still reeling from the death of Brazil’s Jean Da Silva, the international surfing community was dealt a heavy second slug to the gut this morning: the news of the death of Oscar Moncada, the 34-year-old Mexican star known for his remarkable talent in heavy surf, not least of which his beloved local, Puerto Escondido.
Moncada was involved in a collision with a commercial truck just south of Puerto. The accident resulted in his death (Oscar was projected from the vehicle), along with that of *two other fellow Puerto locals, Waldo Rendón and Diego Oropeza, who were tragically trapped and burned in the car.
The news sent shockwaves through social media, the Volcom international team member having touched the lives of countless surfers who’ve enjoyed his hospitality in Puerto Escondido, where each year without fail Moncada would nab one of the season’s most talked about bombs.
*Originally reported as four casualities.
“Puerto had been really good, in the 6-8 foot range for a couple of weeks,” lensman Edwin Morales told Stab of this shot of Moncada at home. “Oscar had just recovered from Dengue Fever. But as you can see, he started right where he left off. He’s no stranger to the barrel. He got the two best waves of the day and in this particular one he sets his high-line, gathers speed and eyeballs an exit.”
Just before setting out on the drive that would end his young life, Moncada took to Instagram, mourning the loss of his friend Jean Da Silva.
“Rest in peace, friend #RIP still can not believe why?” Moncada wrote. “I’ll miss you brother, today I cry for you.”
Our condolences to the Moncada family, the Puerto Escondido surf community, and all those who were lucky to know him. Rest In Peace, Oscar Moncada.
