Mason Ho & Snapt 4 Take Out The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout
Honorable mention to Kala Grace for his tapped 12-point ride.
The Da Hui Backdoor shootout has just concluded, Pipe didn’t disappoint. Waves were double-overhead, consistent, and clean – proper blue bird conditions.
Mason Ho won, Balaram Stack got second, John John third. Team Snapt 4 won the Team division. Bethany Hamilton is fucking gnarly, which she also got an award for, so is Moana Wong, who was awarded not with a cheque, but a perfect Pipe bomb, that she knifed into gracefully in her final heat, and got spat right out of.
The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout featured a funky format that involved 33-minute heats, sporadic score updates, and a underground and informative broadcast that gave viewers a feel for the underground culture of the North Shore. Felt like a grassroots surf contest, but with superstars, at the world’s most deadly wave, with heavyweight commentary, and legitimate broadcast infrastructure to create an entertaining online event.
There’s not a whole lot to say about the event really, other than, more please. Waves were pumping, performances were incredible, and the overall tone, by virtue of it being a contest run for surfers by surfers, featuring men and women, teams etc… worked. Really well.
What a great little innovation on a surf contest.
