Laird Says, Women On Their Periods Are Likely To Be Attacked By Sharks

They can smell the menstruation!

The gossip bible, TMZ, solicited Laird Hamilton in Malibu for some shark advice. Laird, god bless him, explained that the most common, unspoken reason for shark attacks is a woman on her period due to “obvious blood in the water.” And then followed it up with a piece of wisdom that can only be instilled by the man who use to tow Jaws on a foil board, “it’s like carrying a lightning rod and being surprised you were struck by lightning.” Which, on the surface, we couldn’t refute. So, we asked the internet. And in turn learned more about menstruation than ever before. Like, did you know that according to Dr Chris Lowe, head of California State University, Long Beach’s shark lab, “The amount of blood that is produced during menstruation is so small that it becomes background with all of the other components in the water? It would be very difficult for a shark to localise that.” Also, sharks are attracted to amino acids, which are present in sweat and urine. According to Outside Magazine, “All of this means that sharks probably won’t pick up on your period from two miles away and make a beeline for your uterus.” However, from 20-30 feet this may be a different story. The more you know.
