Filipe Toledo just won the Vans Us Open of Surfing

Are you surprised? Hey, us neither! It was only a matter of time until Filipe Toledo was getting sprayed in the eye with champagne that he ain’t old enough to drink in most countries, and especially in the US of A where he just won the Vans US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach. Given his featherweight game, and the smallish beachies of HB, Filly was always gonna be a safe bet. He beat fellow Brazilian Willian Cardoso in the final who plays a powerhouse game not so well suited to the finals day conditions, and certainly no match for Filipe’s lightfoot. “It was an amazing heat against Willian,” said Filipe. “He’s been surfing really well the whole competition. I just turned my game to the air game so I could do what I love to do and it worked. I had to surf though a lot of pain with my ankle (thanks to a sprain in Africa) and just put it out of my mind. I felt comfortable in these conditions. I won the junior in 2011 and was just feeling confident throughout the week.” Vans US Open of Surfing Men’s Final Results: Filipe Toledo (BRA) 17.56 def.
