Fatal shark attack at Shelly Beach, NSW
An unidentified man has been killed by a shark at Shelly Beach near Ballina, NSW this morning. According to ABC News, Paramedics unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate the man on the beach, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. All beaches from South Ballina to Lennox Head have been closed. Details are still unclear, but this news comes just one day after 35-year-old surfer Jabez Reitman was attacked at Seven Mile beach (the stretch heading north from Lennox Head) – less than 12km north of today’s attack site. Jabez escaped with lacerations to his buttocks and back before driving himself to hospital and setting up an interview with Channel 9. Sadly, his fellow beach-goer to the south wasn’t so fortunate. The shark in question is said to be ‘fair sized,’ but little else is known at this stage. And, it’s still unclear whether it was the same shark. One thing is certain though – this summer’s sure been an active one where shark presence is concerned.
