Dakota Briley, Son Of Pipe Legend Shawn Briley, Hospitalized In Freak North Shore Traffic Accident
“He needs a miracle from god to make him whole again.”
North Shore traffic was brought to a standstill yesterday after reports emerged that Dakota Briley — son of legendary Pipeline surfer Shawn Briley — was seriously injured in a freak accident while loading surfboards at Chun’s, between Waimea Bay and Haleiwa.
“He was standing on the side of the road at Chun’s, where I always park, and got pinned in between cars while loading boards,” wrote North Shore longboard star and Chun’s regular, Rosie Jaffurs. “I’m always standing in the same spot in fear of the road and it’s just unfortunate this happened. Please be OK and make a full recovery.”
“
Chun’s is a soft, right-hand reef break visible from Kam Highway — one of the North Shore’s more approachable waves, and a hub for surf schools run by locals like Brian Surrat and Dakota’s uncle, Kalani Chapman.
“Please continue to pray for our Dakota, he’s in really rough shape and needs a miracle from god,” Dakota’s brother Ryder took to Instagram Monday morning with an update. “His ribs have been crushed, his spine is severed and broken in multiple places, the back of his skull has been crushed, fractured in 8 places, from the hips down his legs have been crushed. He needs a miracle, please pray for God to make him whole again.”
Like his dad, Dakota has emerged as one of the North Shore underground’s barnstorming crop of young chargers, putting his stamp on Pipeline and and beyond.
Dakota, like Shawn, can often be seen riding gorgeous precision guns from his Uncle Owl Chapman, as well as longtime family shaper Brett Marumoto.
Keep Dakota and the Briley family in your thoughts.
