Cluster premieres in Sydney
All photos by Life Without Andy Last night Kai Neville and co. (being Creed McTaggart, Jack Freestone, Mitch Coleborn, Ryan Callinan, Craig Anderson, Noa Deane, Conner Coffin and more) opened the Australian premiere of his new film Cluster to the Cremorne Orpheum Theatre. It was as full-house as surfing premieres get (especially considering tickets had to be paid for with real money!) and housed that beautifully awkward mix of pros and fans in the room. Both Coleborn and Conner hadn’t seen their sections yet, so sat front and centre. Kolohe Andino was there checking out what’s been happening while he’s been winning. The cult-God of this particular surfing sect, Ozzie Wright, high-fived the room with his usual rainbows. But really, it was a tame affair in comparison to the US prem, by all accounts. Surfers, both staged and those seated, had heats to surf in the Australian Open today at Manly because the Quey still pays many bills #irony. Vaughan Blakey as MC said jokes well, Kai got lost on a little tangent and Jack Freestone’s section received the biggest throat-burning accolades because it’s fucking amazing and unexpected. But there was no “fuck the WSL” chant, or Dion Agius in his speed-dealing singlet or any buzz like that. Just a nice surf movie in a pretty cinema.
