Bruce Irons Misses The Boat And Kerrzy Takes The Single-Fin Division In The Air

Cheater fives and highlines will not win heats at the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy.

Right now, the competitors of the world’s most LUX surf event are feeling the pressure from their wives and girlfriends. That’s because this isn’t just a surf event, it’s $40k all inclusive holiday. The winner of the Champions Trophy is invited back to defend his title, and thus the gals reap the benefits of fine dining, massages, and rooms at the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa included in this five-star affair.

Today, they ran the Single-fin division on the dreamboat righthander, Sultans. Freddy P went out with a classic approach. His goal: throw 70’s flair in the single-fin division. He didn’t do one proper turn. He highlined. He cheater-fived. He never deviated from the program.

The crowd cheered on.

The judges weren’t as impressed – still, no one encapsulated the spirit of the event more. Freddy lost to Josh Kerr in the Semis while Alejo Muniz lost to CJ Hobgood in the same round.

In the final, a battle of screw v natural foot ensued between Mr. Kerr and Mr. Hobgood. CJ’s backhand cut like a chef’s knife through a red onion – smooth, sharp, and wrapped in high-fidelity. He hooked consistent jabs and gouges with surfing suited to a single-fin. If it weren’t for Josh’s aerial antics on his Tyler Warren shape in the final minute of the heat, CJ would’ve won.

Local wildcard Abdulla ‘Fuku’ Areef saw himself unable to progress after the first round. He rode a single fin for the first time a few days ago. His local knowledge–like Freddy P’s five-piggies-over–were enough to impress the crowd but not the judges. High-performance surfing is what will be rewarded regardless of craft.

Bruce Irons is in this event. He missed a flight and had to withdraw from the Single-fin division. He is looking to arrive just in time to bring out one of his fresh Mayhem twinnies.

Tune in tomorrow for more of this opulent event.
