Breaking: Uluwatu Is On Fire
Very unlike the Padang Cup.
This afternoon at the same site of the not-Margaret River Pro, Uluwatu, a massive fire broke out. At this time, photos and videos of burning buildings atop the lush cliff are pouring through social media and news outlets.
The fire is, according to Coconuts Bali News, “to have originated somewhere near Ulu Cliff and spread to Bluepoint in Labuansait in Bali’s Bukit Peninsula just up from the island’s famous Uluwatu surf break.”
Firefighters have taken to the area, putting in their best effort to smother the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
There have been no reports of the total damages, injuries or deaths as a result of this natural or manmade disaster.*
Stab sends its best wishes to the citizens and people currently passing through Bali.
*Update from Bali:
“They sorted out the fire yesterday,” local pro, Lee Wilson tells Stab. “It was burning foam materials that started it apparently. I wasn’t able to see it from my house in Canguu but it looked toxic.”
“Rumor has it that they are building a new villa, it had a gas leak and caught fire,” local lensman, Rory Russel tells Stab. “Then it spread like crazy.
“There are no fire hydrants here so the fire trucks had to do a 15 to 20 minute trip to refill the tanks. It was really hard for them to get it under control. By yesterday evening, however, they had a pretty good handle on it.
It was crazy, all the Single Fin Employees [A notable bar and grill at Uluwatu] were scooping up water from the pool and pouring it on the deck so the fire didn’t spread. Not sure on the total damages, but from what I’ve seen at least 30 villas burned down.”
