Breaking: ‘Serious’ Shark Attack At Nambucca Heads
The 36-year old man has been flown to John Hunter hospital.
This morning, at approximately 7am, a man was bitten on the leg by an unknown species of shark off Nambucca Heads breakwall. He’s currently in a serious condition and being flown to John Hunter hospital 300km south in Newcastle.
According to the ABC, the man was surfing at the rivermouth near the breakwall when the attack occurred. He was dragged up onto the breakwall by a number of other surfers who were in the water when the attack occurred, one of these surfers applied a tourniquet to the wound.
He was treated at the scene for five deep lacerations to his leg, and had “lost a lot of blood”, therefore receiving a blood transfusion before being airlifted to hospital. The helicopter was scheduled to stop via Port Macquarie hospital to pick up more blood products on the way to John Hunter due to the volume of blood loss.
All beaches nearby have been closed with additional jet-ski and aerial surveillance being implemented for the remainder of the day.
We urge anyone surfing or swimming in the region to take extra precautions.
We also give our best wishes to the man who was attacked this morning, here’s hoping he makes a full and prompt recovery.
We’ll update this story as more information comes to light.
