“A Surfer In The Trials Used An Electronic Scooter To Get Up The Point. This Will Not Be Allowed In The CS Event”
The WSL crackdown on genius.
Yesterday we learned that a surfer in the trials event for Snapper used an e-bike to get back up the point.
That surfer was Mitch Parkinson, a surname with significant heft attached to it around the Cooly zone. Mitch, cousin of Joel Parkinson, 2012 World Champion, once won a QS 3000 back in the day (the So Sri Lanka Pro in 2019). He is also responsible for our most watched Instagram post ever, where he dethrones his relative (who burns him), steals his board, transitions onto it, rattles off several turns, and rides a wave to the bottom of the point, where dolphins join him. It is remarkable.
Pre Challenger Series event the WSL ran a trials event with the top two spots being seeded into the round of 96 at Snapper. It was won by Alister Reginato and Sierra Kerr. At Snapper, a long wave, surfers often opt to run around rather than paddle. Mitch, however, had a better plan – hop on the back of his mates e-bike and fang it up the point. Pure genius.
When The WSL caught wind of his cheat code, they swiftly laid down the law. Via WhatsApp on Sunday they notified all CS surfers that the use of electronic vehicles would not be permitted.
All part of their scheme to make surfers’ lives that little bit harder?
