This happens all too often… A ten year old boy was attacked by a shark yesterday off Makaha Beach in Oahu while riding his boogie board. “I saw this ten-year-old boy get bumped out of the water,” an off-duty lifeguard, Capt. Kelly Krohne told KGMB. “then he started screaming, Uncle! Uncle! I got hit!”
Krohne paddled over to the boy, and caught a wave in. He suffered a wound to his right thigh. The attack occurred roughly 60 yards off shore. “He had three gashes on his leg, his thigh was wide open,” Capt. Kelly said.
Dr. Carl Meyer, of the Hawaii Institue of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii told KMGB that nearly one-third of all shark attacks in Hawaii occur during October and November. This is ‘pupping season’ for tiger sharks. “It is possible that pregnant and post-partum female tiger sharks are feeding more frequently than other individuals,” Mr Meyers said.
This is the seventh attack in Hawaii this year and the third attack in Oahu this month.
