An Easy Ticket Into The Finless Game?
Asher Wales takes The Bomber for a spin (or three on one wave).
Looking to become the next Derek Hynd? Hoping to revolutionise the game via the outer reaches of high performance frictionless surfing? Not really? Well a soft board is a cheap and consequence-free route to exploring the world of sans-fins surfing. Barriers to entry are minimal; all you’ll need is an open mind, an open face (semi-optional) and a mere handful of skrill to open the alt doors. And if you’re still finding your feet, the flags are up or the lady friend wants a dig, screw your regular (FCSII) fins in and steer that squishy hunk of foam on down the line.
Here’s a model that’ll suffice in getting you a ticket into this party; Softech‘s latest foam silhouette, The Bomber. It’s 5’10 with a double stringer, a standard thruster setup and a pulled in rear end. How many pintail softboards have you seen in action? The bloated front section and trimmed booty, piques our curiosity. Without all that tail area, would one expect more bite? More pivot and less slip (when claws are in)?
Softech labels it a “cruiser”, that will “flow down the line & turn on a dime.” Watching the bleached Asher Wales slide and spin the thing definitely sells it as a finless option. With it’s skimpy tail shape, would a twin setup be another enjoyable option for when you need the grip? Yes, Softech, we’ve been good to you this year, how about a few Christmas demos for Stab’s Bondi HQ?
