Meet: The Latest Advancement In Legrope Tech
FCS is putting the ‘rope’ back in legrope – and it just might be a game changer.
The humble and often overlooked leggy may be in the midst of a mutation that has the potential to pave the way for a hardware revolution. Admittedly, that statement sounds a little dramatic, though not nearly as much as the soundtrack in the release clip above. But for friends and fellow hardware dorks, there is true reason to get mildly excited.
See, we had a pair of FCS’s new Freedom Leashes sent to our Bondi Beach office for a test ride and the opportunity to write up our own unbiased (and un-commissioned) opinion piece. We won’t give too much away about that experience just yet, but the new formula did reaffirm FCS’s “lighter” and “stronger” claims.
They’re not made like the leash you’re used to, resembling more of a traditional rope in design. This means they don’t stretch out or recoil back, they’re narrower in diameter and weigh considerably less. Perfect for those tuned into their game enough to notice the difference in the water. The strap looks and feels sleek, minimal and comfortable. For an accessory that has hardly changed over the last few decades, the upgrade is refreshing.
Let’s run through the detail FCS supplied:
“The new Freedom Leash features a revolutionary new cord, that by diameter, is lighter and stronger than any other cord. With a focus on strength and minimalism, every component of the leash has been re-designed to compliment the cord so you can… Surf Free.”

The Cord:
High tensile over-braided nylon cord
-Lighter & stronger.
Thinner and more hydrodynamic
-Less drag, surf faster.
Over stretch limiter
-Designed to return to original length. Reduces tangling.
Stainless steel swivels
-Uninterrupted motion.

The Strap:
Silicone grip print
-Reduces slipping around ankle.
3mm neoprene padding
-Thin, light and comfortable.
Low profile moulded padding
-Stronger & more reliable.
Lightweight moulded pull tab
-Ergonomic, quick release.
Foam filled composition horn
-Lighter shock absorbing.
Extended horn length
-Reduces back foot tangling.
The Rail Saver:
Lighter and thinner for less drag
-More hydrodynamic for increased speed in the water.

Now let’s hear it from the FCS A-Team:
“The overall feel and zero drag is awesome.” – Julian Wilson.
“The new leash is SICK! I’ve used it every single session I surfed since you gave it to me, feels great.” – Mason Ho.
