Captain Fin Co’s Black Panther Will Make You Surf Just Like Dane Reynolds
60 percent of the time it works every time.
There’s a panther in Ventura, she’s black, has three fangs and preys upon Rincon. Dane Reynolds appears in the distance; he’s got her by the chops; she’s ready to pounce, but master Reynolds keeps her subdued. “Shhh…little one, wait until the tide’s right, until the setting sun, until it gets hollow through the river mouth and connects to the 101.” The panther pants and purrs as Dane scratches her belly, twists her buttons and pops her fangs into the bottom of his Channel Islands Sampler.

The sun starts its descent. They hit the water as a single entity of fibreglass, honeycomb, man, and beast. It’s four o’clock. It’s November, swell’s building and westerly walls are stacking from the Cove to the boulders fighting for space beneath the highway.
Dane whips past the locals who are barbecuing, heckling and marinating at the beach shack that greets the Rincon trail. His Black Panther chirps beneath his back foot, she gathers speed, holds when necessary and lets loose when he exchanges weight from toe to heel. Her fangs dig into Rincon’s walls; she’s the princess vying for Ventura’s northern throne (or Santa Barbara’s Southern–depending how you look at it). Oh, how she purrs, roars and hisses! So agile, fast and controlled. Beneath Dane’s feet is a feline caged for too long seizing the moment she can chase and kill again.

“It’s so fast,” says Dane. “That’s kind of all you need.”
